Occupation summary

This apprenticeship follows a core and options structure. All apprentices must complete the core and choose one specialist option from the following: credit risk analyst, senior credit controller or debt collection specialist, or senior enforcement specialist.

This occupation is found across a wide range of organisations, including financial services, utilities, government departments, and private sector businesses. It operates in organisations of varying sizes, from small businesses with a single credit manager to large organisations with dedicated teams of credit controllers, debt collection specialists, or enforcement agents. Some organisations specialise in providing third-party services such as debt collection, debt purchase, and enforcement. Roles are typically office-based within finance or shared service environments, with enforcement roles primarily field-based.

The broad purpose of the occupation is to manage credit risk, protect cash flow, and support sustainable business activity. This includes assessing creditworthiness, managing customer accounts, and recovering outstanding payments. The occupation contributes to financial performance by maximising cash collection, minimising bad debt, and supporting positive customer outcomes, while ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

There are three specialist career paths within this occupation:

  • Credit risk analysts work with other departments to manage disputes and customer complaints while assessing and advising on credit risk.
  • Senior credit controllers and debt collection specialists hold significant responsibility.
    • Senior credit controllers manage high-value business accounts, working closely with sales and finance managers to make credit decisions, ensure payment to agreed terms, and recover outstanding debts.
    • Debt collection specialists focus on overdue or unpaid balances, typically supervising teams handling high volumes of consumer accounts, including those involving vulnerable customers. At a senior level, they provide expert guidance on complex cases, support key accounts, and may coordinate referrals to specialist colleagues or external agencies. Their focus is on achieving positive customer outcomes while identifying sustainable repayment solutions that reduce the risk of arrears and bad debt.
  • Senior enforcement specialists recover debt by taking control of and, where necessary, arranging the sale of goods to repay creditors.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with internal and external stakeholders, including finance, sales, customer service, legal and compliance teams, and business or individual customers. They manage customer accounts, resolve queries and disputes, and communicate via phone, email, and written correspondence. They handle a range of situations, including customers in financial difficulty or with complex needs, and are required to maintain professional relationships while working in a fast-paced, target-driven environment.

An employee in this occupation would be responsible for managing credit risk and debt recovery activities in line with organisational policies, strategy, and regulatory requirements. This includes making informed decisions on credit, collecting payments, maintaining accurate records, and supporting customers, including those in vulnerable circumstances. Responsibilities include managing customer relationships, resolving disputes, minimising financial risk, and ensuring appropriate and ethical outcomes. They apply commercial awareness, analytical skills, and effective communication to support organisational objectives and maintain compliance.
